Courses and teaching

The research team at the Social Science Research Institute has a vast experience of teaching methodology at the departments of the University of Iceland. The teaching has spanned a wide range of both methodological traditions – quantitative and qualitative – from basic concepts to complex methodological projects.

In quantitative courses, students are introduced to various concepts of statistics, descriptive statistics, and graphical representation of data. The basics of probability theory, inferential statistics and regression analysis are also taught. Students receive training in Excel as well as basic statistical programs such as Jamovi, SPSS and R.

In qualitative courses, students are introduced to the main concepts and theoretical assumptions of qualitative methodology. Students get an insight into different research traditions within qualitative research, e.g. case studies, phenomenology, and grounded theory. Students receive training in research preparation, research planning, data collection, analysis methods and presentation of results.
